Khandoba Temple, Jejuri – A Celebration of Turmeric and Faith
Visit the famous hilltop temple of Jejuri, where the air is filled with golden turmeric powder (Bhandara) thrown in joyous devotion to Lord Khandoba.
The Khandoba Temple, located in the town of Jejuri in Maharashtra, is a magnificent shrine dedicated to Lord Khandoba, a fierce form of Lord Shiva. Perched atop a hill, the temple, often referred to as 'Sonyachi Jejuri' (Golden Jejuri), is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for the devotees of Khandoba, who is the tutelary deity for a large number of communities in the Deccan region.
The temple is renowned for its unique and vibrant celebrations, especially the practice of showering turmeric powder, or 'Bhandara,' as an offering to the deity. This tradition turns the entire temple complex into a golden spectacle during festivals. The climb to the main shrine involves ascending a long flight of steps, flanked by deepmalas (stone lamp pillars), offering a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

The temple's architecture is a mix of Maratha and Hemadpanti styles, with a spacious courtyard and several smaller shrines. The main idol of Lord Khandoba is depicted on horseback with his consorts Mhalsa and Banai. The atmosphere is charged with energy, with devotees chanting "Yelkot Yelkot Jai Malhar" and participating in traditional folk music and dance.
A visit to Jejuri is not just a pilgrimage but a cultural immersion, offering a spectacular display of faith, color, and tradition that is truly unforgettable.
